As General George Washington’s chief intelligence officer and leader of the famed Culper Spy Ring\, Tallmadge played a vital role in securing American independence.\nThe presentation will explore Tallmadge’s life and his daring 1780 raid across Long Island\, including the capture of a British fort in Mastic and the destruction of a large stockpile of hay in Coram that was destined to feed British cavalry horses.

Join master spinner Toni Kaste for a demonstration of an antique spinning wheel as she transforms raw wool and flax into yarn using traditional techniques. \nLearn how colonial families produced the materials needed for clothing and household textiles\, from preparing fibers and spinning yarn to weaving fabric and coloring it with natural dyes. Toni will explain each step of the process. \nThis program is fun for all ages. Children will have the opportunity to try using drop spindles and card wool. Whether you are interested in history or traditional skills\, this demonstration will offer a glimpse into everyday life in early America.

DESCRIPTION:18th Century Military Encampment with the 3rd NY Regiment in Celebration of America’s 250th Anniversary\nCome join us on August 8 and 9\, 2026\, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Swezey Park on the lake in Yaphank. The 3rd NY Regiment 1775 Long Island Companies\, a Revolutionary War reenactment group\, will present an authentic 18th-century military encampment\, recreating the daily life of Long Island soldiers and their families during the American Revolution; included will be canvas tent quarters for troops and officers\, military drills\, field maneuvers\, and musket and cannon demonstrations. Civilian camp followers will be on site\, illustrating the role families played in supporting the Continental Army. \nOn Sunday\, Toni Kaste will be here showcasing the art of traditional spinning from 11:00 to 3:00 pm. She’ll demonstrate how fiber is transformed into yarn using an antique spinning wheel.
